The God who is with Us

“After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, the LORD said to Joshua son of Nun, Moses' aide: "Moses my servant is dead. Now then, you and all these people, get ready to cross the Jordan River into the land I am about to give to them-to the Israelites. I will give you every place where you set your foot, as I promised Moses. Your territory will extend from the desert to Lebanon, and from the great river, the Euphrates-all the Hittite country-to the Great Sea on the west. No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

- the Lord, Joshua 1:1-5

I believe this is what every leader’s hope- that the Lord would guide and be with us, as we continue the journey of leadership.

After Moses’ death, the Israelites continued the journey through the Promised Land, Canaan. These groups of people were the younger generation of Israelites who were perhaps still kids or young people back then. It was through them that the Promise would be fulfilled. But the question arises: “who will lead us?”

The Lord called Joshua, Son on Nun, to lead them; He was one of the spies going to the Canaan Lands, He was Moses’ aid and companion. He grew up to be a fine young man that the Lord has called him to fill Moses’ shoes as a leader of the chosen people of God.

Together with this new group of Israelites would the Lord fulfill his plans. It was through this comforting words that, I believe, Joshua got his courage to stand tall and fight: “No one will be able to stand up against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you…” that’s what gave him the strength to move on and conquer.

And so is it with us, all of us chosen as leaders from our churches, civic groups, government and all sects of organizational groups. God will be with us, for He has promised it through Joshua, the Judges, the good kings - like Saul, David, Solomon and many more. He was with the Prophets, and He was with Jesus and the Apostles, He is with us right now. “He will never leave us nor forsake us” no matter how hard the battle is- for He is God with us, our Emmanuel. Let us trust him at that.
